So why do we put letters and numbers together? Doesn’t that seem a little absurd to you? Well, we put letters in the place of things we don’t know about. Like if someone told you that they had 3 jellybeans but someone took 1.Your first instinct is to subtract 1 from 3 to see how many they have, right. Well what if that was a math question and you had to make a simple equations. What would you write in place of two?? Well you would put a x in place of the 2. Your equation would look like this 3 – 1 = x.
